Bullied - Editing Practice
This is a very short film that I made within a group of four, in which we used it as practice for our coursework. We had a set dialogue, and a list of different shot sizes and cinematography techniques to include, and we had 2 hours to film and edit it.
What I have created isn't the best piece of film, but I am quite proud of what I have achieved due to this being my first ever short film. It uses techniques like shot reverse shots, long shorts, eye line matches, match on action, close ups, etc. This is exampled within the conversation between the two friends that are bulling the other character.
I think the use of focusing is particularly good, because it allows the audience to see exactly who the girls are talking about without there being any dialogue. The focus is a wide depth of field as you can see the background and the foreground together, as you can see all three characters in that shot. Furthermore, you can tell that 'Lauren' is the one being bullied due to the framing between the other two characters, therefore the audience pays attention to this.
I also used an eye line match when one of the girls looks down at her phone, and then sends the text, as it is a subjective point of view of the phone, after the audience is wondering what she is looking at. This is effective as the audience wonders whether or not the girl will send the mean text, and we have to wait her decision before being shown that it was sent.

Something that I'd like to improve is the audio of the dialogue, as it is very choppy. I would try using an external microphone, and two cameras to capture the conversation at the same time, and just use one audio track, and switch between the camera shots.
I would also alter the tilt at the end, as the sun comes through a bit too much behind Lauren's head, and I'd try make the transition a bit smoother.
Ultimately, I believe that this is still valuable for my music video as I got some practice of the editing software that I will be using for the final production.
